Horn Pond, Help Protect Freshwater

These photos tell the story of the herring migration at Horn Pond Spillway. Herring are important because they serve as the foundation of the ocean's food web. They travel to freshwater bodies to spawn annually.

The other part of the story of this water body is that it’s a unique area in that it’s part of one of the most populated watersheds in America, The Mystic River Watershed. This pond is also host to a wide range of bird species because of its diverse topography.

Myself and others volunteer by counting the herring entering the pond in Spring through The Mystic River Watershed Association. This data has been integral in the implementation of a fish passage that will be built in 2026 and will account for drought conditions as well.
